Hasmukh Review, Binge Or Cringe: Vir Das’ Hasmukh Is Promising But Does It Have Enough Gags To Keep You Hooked?
Vir Das has arrived to entertain one and all with his stand-up comedy act in Netflix’ new series Hasmukh. Does the show live up to its title? Read our review to find out
Starring Vir Das, Netflix’s new series Hasmukh is the story of a small town comedian who has been awaiting a big break in the world of stand-up, and what happens when he realizes that killing people is what inspires him to give his best on stage!
Set in Saharanpur, Hasmukh Sudiya is the guy who will remind you of that boy who has been neglected and exploited since childhood. His only ambition is to be a comedian one day! After years of being denied a chance – comes a day when he accidentally kills his ‘guru’ Gulati, who is just about to perform on stage– hence, Hasmukh gets his golden CHANCE!
Gulati’s death leads to Hasmukh taking his guru’s place – he wins over the audience and seems to have his career as a stand-up artist all set. Jimmy (Ranvir Shorey), the only one who knows Hasmukh’s dirty secret, teams up as his manager and the duo move to Mumbai to make it big, except, they soon realise that Hasmukh is an epic fail on stage unless he kills someone before getting there.
Hasmukh which has been co-created and co-scripted by Vir Das is a refreshing watch but loses the vital element that a black comedy should have – GAGs. For a show that revolves around a comedian and standup comedy – the jokes are quite flat and miss those sarcastic punches.
With a rating of 18+ this Netflix show has scenes which are not suitable for family viewing, and keeping in mind the dark comedy genre, it features high on our beep meter.
Ranvir Shorey as bade bhaiyya aka Jimmy and Ravi Kishan as the channel honcho are a delight to watch. Not to forget, Suhail Nayyar whose portrayal as KK – Hasmukh’s competitor ensures some edge-of-the seat moments in the final episode!
This 10-episodic series might not really tickle your ribs but if you are a fan of dark comedies, you might find this one appealing. Our verdict is Binge-worthy!
